Australian Government seeks Muralitharan & Malinga's help to stop 'Asylum Boats' flowing from Sri Lanka

Feb 22, 2013 (SLBO) - The Federal Government of The Australia had turned to a pair of Sri Lankan cricket stars in an attempt to stop the flow of asylum seeker boats from the island nation, Toowoomba-based daily paper The Chronicle said in a report.

Accordingly retired great test cricket bowler and first wrist-spinning off-spinner in the 'Cricket History' Muttiah Muralitharan and Twenty20 star fast bowler - rare round-arm action 'Slinger' Lasith Malinga each appear in short videos aimed at Sri Lankans living in Australia.

English and non-English versions of the video have been also recorded, with the cricketers urging people not to encourage family members in Sri Lanka to seek asylum on risky boat journeys with people smugglers. Reports outline that more than 950 Sri Lankan asylum seekers trying to get to Australia by boat have returned home, either voluntarily and involuntarily, since August last year.

On the contrary statistics highlight that Sri Lanka Navy had intercepted hundreds of boats during the period from 2010 to 2012 blocking over 3000 people in the country who attempted to migrate to Australia via illegal means by paying over average US $ 10,000 per person to human smugglers in the island.
