Markets up on thin volumes




Market witnessed energized retail activity on Thursday the 22 December 2011 towards the closing hours which drove both indices up with ASPI and MPI gaining 1.31% and 1.56% respectively. Turnover remained uninspiring with Janashakthi Insurance (JINS) and Commercial Bank (COMB) being actively traded.

All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed at 5,919.35 points whilst Milanka Price Index (MPI) closed at 5,167.81 points. A total volume of 15.9 million shares changed hands (up 14.92%) recording a turnover of Rs.348.9 million. Foreigner bought shares to the tune of Rs.33.89 million and sold nearly Rs.70.09 million worth Colombo listed equities.

Banks, Finance and Insurance sector was the top contributor to the market turnover due to Commercial Bank (COMB) and Janashakthi Insurance (JINS) and the sector index gained 1.71%. The share price of Commercial bank (COMB) rose Rs. 0.80 (0.81%) to close at Rs.100.00 while share price of Janashakthi insurance (JINS) jumped 0.80 (5.56%) to close at Rs. 15.20.

Diversified sector also contributed significantly to the market turnover due to Expo Lanka (EXPO) and the sector index rose by 0.81%. The share price of Expo Lanka (EXPO) increased by Rs.0.20 (2.35%) to close at Rs.8.70. Beverage, Food and Tobacco sector was also among the highest contributors to the market turnover due to HVA Foods (HVA) and the sector index shed 0.59%. The share price of HVA Foods (HVA) gained Rs. 1.70 (4.97%) to close at Rs. 35.90.
