Seylan Bank Sri Lanka with Rs. 01 Mn

Dec 14, 2011 (LB) Colombo. Mon 12 December 2011. Seylan Bank recently re-defined the concept of savings, in an initiative hitherto not seen in Sri Lanka's banking and financial services industry, by literally "dropping" Rs. 01 Mn from the skies and parallely supported by a door-to-door campaign.

On Saturday 22 October helicopters hovered over different parts of Sri Lanka and dropped thousands of coupons with special serial numbers and individualised barcodes to an eager public below. Parallely on the same day, over 3000 staffers from Seylan Bank's 131 branches all over Sri Lanka embarked on a door-to-door campaign distributing similar coupons.

This initiative drew great attention from the public of Sri Lanka and produced lucky winners whose tickets matched the winning numbers drawn on ITN the following night. Among them were Miss P.M. Dissanayake of Avissawella, Mrs. K. K. Swarnamala from Weliweriya, Mrs. G.A.J.N. Dilrukshi of Anuradhapura, Mr. M.P.M.M. Haseem of Pelmadulla and Mrs. A.J Mary Seetha of Puttalam.

This was a dream come true for Mrs. K.K. Swarnamala of Weliweriya. A mother of two, son Kavinda (10) and daughter Charu (16), her husband works in a security firm. Both she and her daughter had got tickets from Seylan Bank staff in the Kirindiwela Town that Saturday. "I wanted to win but I never thought I would be lucky. Our TV set is broken, so we went next door to my sister's house. We checked the numbers and when I realised I had won, I was thrilled. It was unbelievable", she says. "My husband already has an account with the Seylan Bank. I will now open two accounts for my children and use part of it for their education. We're indebted to Seylan Bank for this wonderful opportunity".

Mrs. G.A.J.N. Dilrukshi of Anuradhapura was not aware of this promotion until a member of the Seylan Bank came to her grocery store at the Abhayapura Pola in Padaviya and gave her a ticket. Mother of a four-year old son Methuja, her husband works with her brother, while she runs the grocery shop for her mother.

"Winning one lakh of Rupees from Seylan Bank was furthest from my mind. I wrote down the winning numbers that night and checked my ticket the following morning. "Winning was a big shock. Not only had I won but mine was the first number drawn. I have opened an account with Seylan Bank and deposited the money. My dream is to start my own grocery shop one day. This is the beginning".

Dilrukshi was full of praise for the Padaviya Branch of the Seylan Bank. "Padaviya is an area which faced innumerable hardships in the past. With the end of the war, life is coming back to normal. People are now engaged in entrepreneurship and are able to pay back loans unlike earlier. I'm happy to say that our Seyan Bank branch helps the people of the area with its products and services".

Poornima Madushani Dissanayake (22) is the youngest winner. She hails from Malabe and works as a cashier at a clothes store in Warakapola. On the day of the promo, Seylan Bank staff had distributed tickets at random. She too got one. Not in her wildest dreams did she think she would win. "I didn't event check the draw. On Monday we sent our tickets through a colleague to Seylan Bank's Warakapola Branch. She returned almost immediately with the good news that I had won. Yes I am thrilled but I don't have immediate plans to spend it. So I opened an account with Seylan and have deposited it".

Seylan Bank's General Manager / CEO Kapila Ariyaratne said that this initiative was yet another example of the Bank's promise to deliver greater value to its customers by constantly introducing newer and innovative value propositions. "This was, in fact, the precursor to Thagi Pita Thagi, our revolutionary rewards scheme which has now emerged as one of the most acclaimed and sought after, in the local financial services industry. We are totally committed to serve our thousands of current and future customers across Sri Lanka with more exciting products. Furthermore, as the Bank with a Heart we're looking forward to welcoming all our fellow citizens to be a part of the rapidly expanding Seylan family".

Says Seylan Bank Chairman Eastman Narangoda, "We're encouraged with the outcome of this promotion. Being revolutionary and one of a kind, it successfully galvanised the attention of the Sri Lankan public from all walks of life. Apart from its intrinsic hype and excitement, it also successfully communicated the message of the savings habit and importance at all times. Seylan Bank has always paid great importance to the savings habit, both among the young and the old."
